Outcome Mentoring

Are your projects striving for perfection at the expense of a faster, risk-balanced outcome?

We often see projects bogged down with striving for perfection and accepting no risk without realising that the delays this causes could pose a more significant threat to your business.

The first principle of Prince 2 always includes the option of doing nothing, so assess this option with the same rigour as the others because it is not always clear that this option holds more risk for you than some of the not-quite-perfect ones. The same is true if you hit hurdles mid-project and need to agree on some compromise.

This analysis is always more straightforward if you have created excellent requirements and have scored all the outcomes. However, we hear the statement every day when facing an unexpected blocker or failure in the project, “I would not start from here!”.

The trick is not to panic but to strip the component and any dependant components back to the bare bones. Find out what we must make work and what options we must compromise on from our original ask.

By working toward an 80-20 outcome, we often find that you can achieve this with just 20% of the work and complexity. By getting your product early, you can maintain pace with your new young and agile competitors while maintaining your revenues. This outcome would be a welcome result you can build on to perfect the revenues you protected with your early release.

Why not let Shaula Solutions provide a free consultation with your project teams to challenge the status quo and look for where complexity could be stripped back to a minimum viable product that realises benefits earlier?
